International Children’s Games

Team Hamilton won the gold medal in women's basketball at the International Children's Games in Athens, Greece, this past June. With only seven players compared to their competition’s eight, the girls played true unselfish basketball. An enormous amount of character and determination was demonstrated throughout the tournament as the team wore down their opponents in the second half of every game. This is the second straight time that a team from Hamilton has been entered in this tournament and has come home with gold, having won in 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The World’s Masters Volleyball Team went to Australia to become the gold medal winners in their division of the 50 + age group. Most of these players have lived in Hamilton at one point in their lives, playing in Hamilton schools, universities and volleyball clubs. This group of athletic men works hard to manage work, family life and their volleyball aspirations. Let’s give this organization a big applause for showing us all a little determination and great work ethic brings home the gold!

Highland Karate competitors that attend world competition have a very hard training schedule during the year and had to attend approximately eight tournaments in their own province to accumulate points to gain a Provincial level standing.  All competitors must be ranked in the top eight positions for their divisions of competition.  To be chosen for the Canadian National team all competitors must attend the Canadian National Championships in Montreal Canada and must place in the top three medal positions to be chosen to represent Canada and be members of the Canadian National Karate & Kick Boxing Team.  At the Canadian Championships all provinces are represented and those selected after the outcome are true champions that will represent our country. The Blessed Sacrament Junior Girls #1 team set high goals for their season and their biggest success was how these players from rival school programs where they were individual all-stars, overcame their differences and expectation of playing time.  They demonstrated the maturity of young athletes by making sacrifices for the success of the team. This was never more apparent than at the Provincial Championships at the end of our season, where we went undefeated, coming home with the title of "Gold Medal Provincial Champions".

The CANADIAN RED LEAFS competed at the World Master’s in Australia. Their strengths were definitely teamwork and fitness.  They had trained very hard for the games and played 9 games in 9 days with only 1 day of rest. In the championship game they felt that it definitely came down to fitness -it was 0-0 at half time and we came out strong in the second half - while our competitors (the Aussie PAVS) were tired, we were not and were able to score and bring home the Gold!
